Biking Through New River Gorge National Park
Mountain bike racing in West Virginia’s scenic landscapes started around 1983, back when there were no land use restrictions. Many mountain bikers went to the state, exploring its trails and forest roads. The Canaan Mountain Series, which produced the first 24-hour bike race, kicked off West Virginia’s bike racing scene, including iconic events like the Revenge of the Rattlesnake and Blackwater Classic. The West Virginia Mountain Bike Association currently organizes other events in the state to support mountain biking.
The Mountain State is famous for its rolling hills and outdoor recreation. Its topography allows riders to bike almost anywhere, and it’s also the only state completely within the Appalachian Mountain region. The state eventually became an international biking destination. Popular locations such as Snowshoe Mountain and Mountwood Park offer a wide range of trails for all skill levels.
